Where to eat Vleminckx fries: at the counter, with fish, or at a table
Vleminckx fries come from one famous counter on Voetboogstraat, but the family serves them in three places within two hundred metres. Here is which one to pick when you want to queue, want fish with your fries, want to sit down, or want them delivered.
The original: the counter at Voetboogstraat 33
This is where it started in 1957: a hatch in a narrow side street between Spui and Kalverstraat, a paper cone, and the wall of more than twenty sauces. There are no seats and no reservations: you join the line, order at the window and eat on the go. Card and cash both work. The counter is open every day from late morning into the early evening (today's hours are on the home page), and if it is your first time, read how to order like a local.
With fried cod: Fish & Fries at Muntplein 1
A few minutes' walk away, on Muntplein by the Munttoren and the flower market, Fish & Fries serves the same Vleminckx fries next to hand-battered fried cod. The house signature is fries with freshly grated Parmesan. Fish & Fries is open every day until 20:00, a little later than the original counter. Read more: Vleminckx fries at Fish & Fries.
At a table, or delivered: The Chicken Bar at Voetboogstraat 6-8
Further up the same street, The Chicken Bar is the family's sit-down restaurant: rotisserie chicken with Vleminckx fries on a plate and the sauces in pots. It does the three things the counter does not: you can sit down, you can book a table online, and you can have the fries delivered. The Chicken Bar is open every day until 22:00, with delivery from 16:00 to 21:30. Read more: chicken with the famous Vleminckx fries.
Which one when
The cone and the full sauce wall: the counter at Voetboogstraat 33.
Fish with your fries, or a little later in the evening: Fish & Fries at Muntplein 1.
A table, a booking, delivery or dinner until 22:00: The Chicken Bar at Voetboogstraat 6-8.
One family since 1957
All three belong to the same family, Amsterdam's Sausmeesters since 1957, and the fries are Vleminckx fries in every one of them. For something sweet afterwards, The Dutch Chocolate Bar on Heiligeweg 20 completes the quartet. The whole family on one map: the family page.
