Fries near Spui, Kalverstraat and the flower market

Shopping the Kalverstraat, browsing the book market on Spui, or walking the flower market? The best food stop in the quarter is a two-minute detour into a small side street: Voetboogstraat 33.

Finding the shop

Voetboogstraat runs between Heiligeweg and Spui, parallel to Kalverstraat. From Spui square, walk past the American Book Center and turn into the little street on your right: the cream awning and the queue give it away. From Kalverstraat, slip through the arch at Heiligeweg and you are practically there. Coming from the flower market on Singel, it is three minutes via Koningsplein.

A snack built for walking

Vleminckx is a hole-in-the-wall in the most literal sense: a counter, a hatch, no seating. That is not a shortcoming, it is the format. A paper cone of fries is Amsterdam's original street food, made to be eaten while you wander. Popular routes: cone in hand towards the quiet courtyard entrance of the Begijnhof, or down to the Munt tower and the flower market.

Landmarks within five minutes

Spui and its Friday book market. The Begijnhof. Kalverstraat and the Kalvertoren. The flower market on Singel. Koningsplein and the Nine Streets a little beyond. Rokin metro station is four minutes away, tram stops at Spui and Koningsplein are closer still. However you cross the city centre, the cone is never far.
